THE NEED TO SERVE
As Community strand is part of the curriculum of Ateneo De Zamboanga University - School of Medicine, it gives us the opportunity to create change in the lives of the people who needs to step out of their perennial problems – which revolves around health. But, we won’t do all the work for the people, instead, we will work together, we will establish partnership among the different sectors or organizations that can support and uphold them. Sustainability will always be the basis of all plans, it is difficult but the process towards achieving it is all worth it- the elements needed are partnership and trust.
As we work towards Health for All, we believe that the health of the community lies on every individual, like a puzzle piece that needs to be put together to bring about the desired depiction. Since we adhere that health is affected by multi-factorial events thus, we felt the need to dig it all out for them to truly make a difference onto their lives. As individual health can be viewed or affected by health deficits (diseases), health related (poverty, environment), and foreseeable crisis (disaster, security, accidents) it then balances community health with health status (diseases), health related (environment), and health resource (manpower) factors. Hence, the group will start from the source where the household are contained then step by step, start to create a portrait of a healthy community. They, the people, just need to open their eyes and own the existence of their predicaments.
The medical students, therefore envision a community that from a voiceless circumstance, will transform the community into one that speaks, a community that is assertive, and initiate actions leading to an empowered community. This is not an overnight drive; it takes time, actions, and resources. Getting them (community) involved and realize their potentials are all that matters. The plans can be ambitious but we must remember, it is from ambitions that great people, best businesses, emerge.
And as we view health in its specificity, we will battle impediments, conquer what seems impossible, and make means where there seems to be none.
